D.V.D’s – Flash Video Drum&Bass Sync

Published by avicious under Uncategorized

Creating more than just beats, Tokyo-based drum trio d.v.d’s live installations include synchronizing instruments to Flash technology (hooking up two sets of drums to images) resulting in a video game effect. Members Itoken, Jimanica and Ymg began performing in 2006 and have since gathered a large following of fans in both the music industry and the arts playing around Japan and Europe. This year they picked up an honorable mention in digital music from Ars Electronica, the international competition for cyber arts.

Open Sound Control – Intro

Published by avicious under Uncategorized

I do not consider myself a master at my craft, rather a someone with a curious disposition who is making the turn towards either failing into a sea of science to theoretical to crack the thick skull or a progressive step ladder of brilliance. That is left to be determined by time, dedication and the ability to grasp the big picture.

In my efforts to learn more about what is out there I wanted to start highlighting technologies that are moving into the industry faster than the average person thinks. That is where we come to Open Sound Control.

This is an excerpt from the opensoundcontrol.org website:

Introduction to OSC
Open Sound Control (OSC) is a protocol for communication among computers, sound synthesizers, and other multimedia devices that is optimized for modern networking technology. Bringing the benefits of modern networking technology to the world of electronic musical instruments, OSC’s advantages include interoperability, accuracy, flexibility, and enhanced organization and documentation.

This simple yet powerful protocol provides everything needed for real-time control of sound and other media processing while remaining flexible and easy to implement.

Features:
Open-ended, dynamic, URL-style symbolic naming scheme
Symbolic and high-resolution numeric argument data
Pattern matching language to specify multiple recipients of a single message
High resolution time tags
“Bundles” of messages whose effects must occur simultaneously
Query system to dynamically find out the capabilities of an OSC server and get documentation
There are dozens of implementations of OSC, including real-time sound and media processing environments, web interactivity tools, software synthesizers, a large variety programming languages, and hardware devices for sensor measurement. OSC has achieved wide use in fields including computer-based new interfaces for musical expression, wide-area and local-area networked distributed music systems, inter-process communication, and even within a single application.

OSC Research at CNMAT
OSC was originally developed, and continues to be a subject of ongoing research at UC Berkeley Center for New Music and Audio Technology (CNMAT). CNMAT is an interdisciplinary research center within the UC Berkeley Department of Music. CNMAT is known for its dynamic educational, performance and research programs focusing on the creative interaction between music and technology. The Center’s goal is to provide a common ground where music, cognitive science, computer science, and other disciplines meet to investigate, invent and implement creative tools for composers and performers. For more information, please visit our web site: http://cnmat.berkeley.edu.

I will be moving further into OSC soon so check back. Here is a quick video to check the principals of OSC out:

“Largo” a film by Andrew van Baal

Published by avicious under Uncategorized

"Largo" trailer – Los Angeles Film Festival

This film was done over a period of time at what was then the Largo venue. Since then it has reopened in a new part of town. Shot and directed by my good friend, former film school comrad and university roomate, the film follows performances by some of the best talents out there. From music to comedy to other stuff I can’t think of right now – this is a work of true passion by a guy who met his chick there.

Congrats on the success Andy!!! Beaujolie all around!

NEW TOUR DATES! – Transfer w/ VJ JRS

Published by avicious under Uncategorized

I know many have been wondering or at least thought of wondering when VJ
JRS was going to hit the road. Well, that time is now. Jeremy Glaholt and I
are going to be packing up and heading out with Transfer for a small SW tour
that will cover three states and many, many drinks…….

Here is the Itinerary
Nov. 13th Tucson Plush

Nov. 14th Tempe Yucca Tap Room

Nov. 15th Las Vegas Beauty Bar

Nov. 19th Los Angeles Silverlake Lounge

This marks the first time that I have gone out on the road. This means
streamlining and rebuilding the rig again. I have been spending time
reprogramming the rig for the additional CPU and have been able to now,
since adding it, dedicate a firewire camera only feed into the setup. Now
that Jeremy G. is coming along, we will be able to add another dedicated
setup.

I will be blogging from the road and also shooting video to upload. This is
going to be dangerously fun!

Side Note:
I have had this Crystal Castles CD in and out of my decks but tonight I
threw it on and played for about two run throughs of the album. It¹s electro
punk crass suicide distortion loveliness that I had fun working with. The
new ³trailer² clips are very beat friendly and working with the firewire
cameras adds an element of being able to dedicate a DJ cam and dancer cam
for live club shows. Since I have been dedicated mostly to rock at this
point, I haven¹t really explored that avenue but it is quite fun and at the
same time simple enough to put on a decent show.

Maybe I will start booking out down weekends for club work.

XO
