VDMX: Triggering Sources with Audio

Published by avicious under Uncategorized

VDMX
Caught a great tutorial on how to trigger sources in VDMX with Audio. Here is what David from Vidvox wrote in response to a question about triggering sources from an audio feed:

“If you want to trigger cells in the media bin using the Audio Analysis plugin is to route the data-source through a “button” that can be received by a media bin.

I think this is best demonstrated with a quick screen capture:
SEE THE SCREEN TUTORIAL

(This recording starts with a default Media Bin, Buttons plugin, an Audio Analysis listening to the built-in microphone and two loaded clips)”

Sampling Rules?? #VJ

Published by avicious under Uncategorized

I came across this post on the topic of what is ok to and not to sample in today’s visualist world:

http://vjforums.com/showthread.php?t=2923

…and was quite surprised at how heated the debate became. Actually, when I sit back and think about it, the debate is probably just where it should be minus the petty personal attacks on character and whatnot. Sampling is something that does conjure up very real internal emotional responses in me when I am creating new works. On one side there is the “fuck it all” attitude that information should be free and that sampling (when done appropriately – SEE! there it is), is good for the creative community artistically. Then there is the side of me that wants to pay my bills. I would guess that this internal struggle is good in that I am exploring who I am and what my moral makeup is as an artist as well as defining who it is that should be defining me as one. Are we to now consider video samples a tool of creation just as the painter considers paint as their medium? Do they give credit to the manufacturers of the different colors of paint or the brushes that they use? We can purchase video samples on the internet more easily than going to an art store for painting supplies. Why can’t we recycle and reuse video just the way that guitarists reuse and resample guitar chords? To be honest I am still battling with this and hence the sporadic writing and loosely conjured examples. Whatever your belief is I am happy that there is debate on the issue.

Here is the trailer for RIP: A Remix Manifesto 2.0 – essentially an open source model of movie making. It explores this topic in a greater detail.
