Casbah, Transfer, VDMX, AVicious likes San Diego #VJ

Published by avicious under Uncategorized

Casbah 7.31.09

Thanks to everyone who came out to the show at the Casbah last night. TRANSFER killed it last night with some extra special love from us here at AVicious. It was our first run performing with Transfer with our new VDMX system and I got to say that I learned sooooo much working the system last night. Our previous system was very easy to freestyle with but lacked in the overall control and dependability. VDMX’s interface is setup by the operator and thus you get almost exactly what you want and what you are comfortable playing. It also crunched data without fail during the performance. I was running three layers which all had effect running on them (one a firewire camera feed) and it handled just fine. That wasn’t the case in rehearsal though. Had a data jam that put me on edge for a bit. Especially since I forgot to bring my DVD loop back up that I like to run on channel 4 of the Edirol as an emergency go to. Good thing I didn’t need it though.
Another bonus was the amazing response when running Audio Analysis. Patching effect parameters directly to a frequency band freed up a hand to prep additional effects and changes. Much more dynamic as well. “Take Your Medicine”, the one with the pills popping around the stage, was especially good for this as the pills popped in and out directly to the music. Loved it and look forward to experimenting more with it. The next move is to take discrete outs from the audio board and run it through my 1402 board to control what instrument I want feeding the system.

Some quick things I learned:
1) It’s much easier to change FX Presets then Everything Presets.
2) When mapping auxillary screens – lock the screens down with cement so the opening bands don’t just move them.
3) I need to experiment with memo’s quad warp a little more. Had problems when Everything Presets were changed.
4) Assigning FX controls needs to be CLEARLY LABELED no matter how little time I have. Press and Pray can get old.
5) Most important – when you know you messed up a section and somebody says “Wow, that was amazing!” – listen and try and remember what you did wrong in the rightest of ways.

Next up for us is this show with DJ Edgartronic as a warm up for NORTH PARK MUSIC THING. If you want to hang with us in the X1FM studio – info (at) avicio (dot) us

Performance Video & VJ’ing: Increasing Production Value With Live Video – PART ONE
How do you play the same venues with the same lights as everyone else and hope to stand out from the crowd? The divide between music and video performance is blurring at a rapid pace. Many of the tools and techniques that were once out of price range are now available to the average consumer and creative people are latching on to create an entirely new industry right under our noses. Today’s Visualists & VJs are time-based improvisational artists that draw from filmmaking, music, design and coding to create their work. Panelists will be discussing what it takes to become a visual performer, current hardware & software of the trade and how to increase the production value of your performance with a few simple tools you probably already have.

Panelists include John-Ryan Shea (AVicious), Jeremy Glaholt (AVicious),
Matthew Molarius (Transfer & Obscure Magpie) and Matthew Fraynd (Glorybound Productions).
